Harvest Season
Fall is the best time in Texas and what better way to spend a long weekend than by visiting Texas wineries. As the blossoming Texas wine industry continues to mature, the state’s wine quality is growing with strategic uses of Spanish, Italian, and Rhône grape varietals, which suit the warm Texas climate better. Grab a list of Texas wineries you want to visit and pick up a bottle of Viognier or Tempranillo.
Texas Grapes
Viognier has become a Texas grape that grows well here and can produce a range of flavors dependent on how ripe the grapes are harvested. Just ripe and grapefruit flavors predominate. Slightly riper, and flavors of stone fruit (peach, apricot) dominate. Riper still, and it is tropical fruit (mango, persimmon); even riper, and nutty flavors of almond appear. There’s also been an effort to increase Texas grape production, with wineries like William Chris Wines and Perissos Vineyards utilizing 100 percent Texas-grown grapes in their bottlings. Currently, state law only requires 75 percent of each bottle contain Texas grapes.
Plan Ahead
Hours vary by season, so be sure to plan ahead. Check your list of Texas wineries and call or visit their websites for up-to-date hours before heading out.
Make Appointments
On weekends with pleasant weather, and during wedding seasons (spring, fall), the winery tasting rooms can reach capacity. Making appointments in advance is a must for spring and fall visits.
Hydrate
Drink plenty of water before, during, and after tastings, if visiting several wineries. Especially if your list of Texas wineries is long.
Designate a driver
The Texas wine industry is spread out, and the drive times can be extensive. If you aren’t hiring a driver, designate a driver to be safe.
